Home improvements don’t have to break the bank

Bathroom
Whether it’s the master bath or a powder room, bathrooms offer a variety of budget-conscious updates that can make a big difference.
Laura Bordeaux, ASID, an interior designer with FX Design, Inc. in Glastonbury, says a new vanity cabinet will transform the whole room. Thanks to the abundance of today’s pre-made models, there’s a choice to fit every style and budget. Price tags range roughly from $80 to $500. “The manufacturers are churning out every possible choice for a vanity. Asian minimalist, Arts and Crafts, contemporary, traditional—they’re all there,” says Bordeaux.
When tackling a powder-room makeover, Bordeaux advises starting with a budget. With $500 and some hard work and know-how, you can update a 50-square-foot half-bath yourself. She advises allocating $200 for a vanity, $150 for floor tile (a DIY solution that can save labor costs), $50 for a nifty new faucet, and $50 for a new mirror.
“You can repaint, too,” Bordeaux says. “If you plan ahead and set aside a little money, it’s surprising sometimes how far you can stretch your budget.”
